The nicad batteries use cadmium and nickel for its main electrodes. The battery uses nickel oxide as well as metallic cadmium in order to operate, and it is a very common type of rechargeable battery for many consumer applications. The nicad batteries arrived on the market in the 1980s but did not gain popularity until the 1990s Rechargeable batteries were very expensive in the 1980s and hard to find.
The nicad batteries are found in many laptops; cordless phones; wireless phones; emergency lights; remote-controlled devices, such as model boats; cars; airplanes and cordless power tools. There are also large flooded cells, which are used for larger applications, such as aircraft starters, standby power, and electric vehicles. There are many advantages to the nicad batteries including:
 |
- The batteries are more durable than other types in its class
- The nicad batteries typically last longer and can get more charges than other batteries
- They have a higher density of energy when compared to lead acid batteries
- The NiCad is a direct competitor of the alkaline battery but cost more, but gets more charges than the alkaline batteries and therefore, you will save money in the end
- They Offer a higher discharge rate than other batteries and they are important in applications such as power tools
|
The nicad batteries work very well in cordless power tools. Power tools have become quite popular in recent years and nicad batteries, therefore, have proven to be very durable for this type of application. In addition, the batteries are a good value when considering the amount of time they last over other batteries, such as the lithium-ion option. In addition, they are lightweight, which is a huge benefit when you are using hand power tools. After all, you do not want something that is weighing down the tools anymore than their actual weight, which many times can be substantial when you use it for long periods of time.
Moreover, the Nickel-Cadmium battery is certainly nothing new. The nicad battery was invented in 1899 in Sweden. However, the nicad battery has advanced over the years as with all technologies. The fact remains, it has a long history of simply working well for many applications. Therefore, if you have power tools or other types of battery-operated devices, consider using the NiCad battery, because it is lightweight and will last quite a long time. It is made to be used in many consumer application products, but make sure that your particular device will in fact work with the batteries before you head out to purchase them.
Finally, the nicad batteries not only have a long history, but they are more durable than other batteries in its class and they are rechargeable so you can get many hours of use out of them when compared to others.
